Admissions and Financial Aid: The Basics

We use a holistic review process when evaluating students for admission.

That means admission to Columbia is not based on a simple formula of grades and test scores. Instead, we consider a variety of factors: the student’s academic record, extracurricular interests, intellectual achievements and personal background.

Butler Library
Butler Library is the main university library, one of more than 20 at Columbia.

The Columbia Application requires:

  • Biographical information
  • High school transcript
  • One high school counselor’s recommendation and school profile
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers (for engineering applicants, one must come from a math teacher)
  • Lists and descriptions of student’s achievements, activities, interests, employment and summer activities
  • One personal statement
  • One short answer response regarding interest in Columbia
  • For engineering applicants, one short answer regarding interest in engineering
  • Results of the SAT Reasoning and/or ACT exams
  • Two SAT Subject Test scores (for engineering applicants, Math 1C or 2C and Physics or Chemistry)
  • Optional interview with an alumnus or alumna
  • $70 application fee OR fee waiver from a school official

Columbia follows a committee-based approach, and thus every application is read in its entirety by at least two admissions officers before a final decision is rendered; no student is admitted to Columbia College or Engineering without discussion and examination of a candidacy by multiple officers.

To provide a brief introduction to what the Committee may discuss when evaluating a candidate, consider this composite list:

  • The student’s curriculum and grades – we hope to see that a student is challenging herself or himself with a rigorous courseload.
  • The context of a particular candidate, including family, high school, community, interests, and access to resources.
  • The quality of a student’s engagement outside the classroom.
  • The character and personality of a candidate, and the impact she or he will make on our diverse, fully residential campus.
  • The candidate’s fit for the distinctive Columbia experience, which includes the Core Curriculum; a both traditionally collegiate and unmistakably urban campus life; and an Ivy League school where authentic thinkers come to grow.

Important Columbia Admissions Vocabulary:

Early Decision (ED): If Columbia is a student’s first choice, and she or he is committed to attending if admitted, she or he may want to consider applying Early Decision. Students apply by November 1, are notified in mid-December, and then must withdraw all other applications and submit a deposit to enroll if admitted. Students may submit only one Early Decision application.

Regular Decision (RD): Students apply by January 2, are notified of admission around April 1 and have until May 1 to decide whether they will attend Columbia. Students are free to submit multiple Regular Decision applications.
