1. How many students attend Columbia?

Undergraduate enrollment is approximately 4100 in Columbia College and 1300 in The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.

2. What is the percentage of students of color on campus?

Over 40% of our undergraduate student body identify themselves as students of color. Diversity has long been recognized as one of Columbia’s hallmarks. Recently, Black Enterprise Magazine ranked Columbia as the top Ivy League university for African American students. Hispanic Magazine ranked Columbia as one of the top ten colleges in America for Latino/a students.

3. What is the percentage of international students on campus?

Roughly 10% of our undergraduate student body identify themselves as foreign or international. For more information on international programs and services, please visit the Office of International Students and Scholars Web site.

4. Does Columbia have fraternities and sororities?

Yes. Approximately 10-15% of undergraduate students are affiliated with fraternities or sororities. Over 25 chapters exist on campus, and many are housed in the brownstones and row houses that line 113th and 114th Streets.

5. What percentage of students live on campus?

Columbia undergraduate students are guaranteed housing for all four years. Nearly all undergraduates live on campus all four years and first-year students are expected to live on campus.

6. Are students required to live on campus?

Columbia is first and foremost a residential college; first-year students expected to live on campus. Upperclassmen may choose to live off campus if they wish, but nearly all of the student body chooses to reside on campus all four years.

7. What athletics are offered at Columbia?

Columbia University competes at the NCAA Division I level (Division I-AA for football) as a member of the Ivy League. Columbia sponsors varsity teams in 29 intercollegiate sports in addition to many intercollegiate club and intramural teams as well. 8. What student clubs and organizations exist on campus?

Columbia features nearly 500 religious, service, ethnic, musical, political, activist, publication, or hobby student organizations and clubs, as well as various forms of student government. For a complete list of organizations and links, please visit the Clubs and Organizations Webpage page.

9. Does Columbia offer study abroad or exchange programs?

Columbia operates programs in Beijing, Berlin, Egypt, Kyoto, Paris, Shanghai and Venice. Columbia also sponsors special exchange programs with Oxford and Cambridge and in Paris at Sciences Po and at Ecole Polytechnique. The Summer Ecosystem Experience for Undergraduates (SEE-U) allows Columbia College students the opportunity to fulfill the science requirement of the Core and participate in field ecology abroad. In addition, Columbia offers students the chance to study for one semester at Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, D.C., or at Spelman College, a historically Black women’s college in Atlanta, Georgia. The Office of Global Programs assists Columbia students in studying or interning abroad at approximately 150 other approved programs in both developed and developing parts of the world.

10. Does Columbia have ROTC?

Columbia welcomes students who have received ROTC scholarships. Since Columbia does not offer ROTC courses on its campus, students with Army ROTC scholarships may enroll in ROTC courses at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice or Fordham University. Students with Air Force ROTC scholarships may enroll in ROTC courses at Manhattan College, and students with Navy ROTC scholarships may enroll in ROTC courses at the State University of New York- Maritime. Students receive transcripts from these institutions which certify the completion of their ROTC participation.
