Student Awards and Recognition

SEAS Endowed Awards

The following awards are distributed annually to students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at either Class Day or the King's Crown Leadership Awards Ceremony.  While most awards are selected by faculty, administrators, and alumni, Columbia Engineering seniors have the opportunity to vote on the recipient of the George Vincent Wendell Memorial Medal.

Award Descriptions

The George Vincent Wendell Memorial Medal, established in 1924 by alumni and faculty friends of the late Professor George Vincent Wendell to honor and perpetuate his memory, is a certificate and award granted annually by choice of the class and faculty to that member of the graduating class who best exemplifies his ideals of character, scholarship, and service. One student is nominated by each department; and senior class votes to determine the recipient.

The Thomas “Pop” Harrington Medal is awarded to that student in the graduating class who best exemplifies the qualities of character that Professor Harrington exhibited during his forty years of teaching at the school of Engineering from 1894 to 1935. The Harrington Medal is made possible by a very generous and deeply appreciated gift from Dr. Myron A. Coler, B.S. 1934, Ph.D. 1937.

The School of Engineering Student Activities Award is presented to the senior who by virtue of his or her willingness, energy, and leadership has significantly contributed to the co-curricular life of the School.

Campus Life Leadership Awards are conferred from time to time to that student or students whose participation and involvement in undergraduate campus life at Columbia have enhanced the very spirit of student life on campus, and have created a more purposeful, caring and celebrative community at large.  The measure of the undergraduate experience can be found not only in academics but in the service and acceptance that one extends to others.  The recipient of this award has been successful in their endeavor to create a more understanding and accepting environment that preserves the ideals and heritage of the College.

The Costantino Colombo Outstanding Leadership Service Award is a cash award presented each year to one CC and one SEAS student, who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service in working with a broad base of undergraduate constituents and administrators in enhancing undergraduate student life. The students will embody those qualities and characteristics exhibited by Chris Colombo during his 16 years of service as Dean of Student Affairs - innovation, vision and dedication.

School of Engineering and Applied Science Scholar Athlete Award is presented from time to time by the Office of the Dean to that graduating student who has distinguished himself or herself as a varsity athlete and scholar.
