If you are seeking an exception to an academic policy or regulation, you must petition the appropriate office.
Requests regarding Physical Education courses should be directed to Dr. Ken Torrey in the Physical Education Department, 332 Dodge Fitness Center, (212) 854-4001, kwt1@columbia.edu.
For CC students, requests concerning the Science requirement, Major Cultures requirement, or course overlap should be submitted to the Office of the Dean, 208 Hamilton Hall.
For all other requests, you must petition the Committee on Academic Standing. This committee includes the Class Center Deans and Programming and Communications Coordinator.
Actions requiring a petition include:
Taking less than 12 points in a semester
Taking more than 22 points in a semester
Dropping or adding courses after the deadliness.
Changing your grade option after the deadline (P/F, letter grade, R)
Remaining enrolled for an additional term to complete degree requirements
This is not a comprehensive list of actions requiring a petition. You should speak with a class dean at your Class Center if you are unsure of whether you need to petition.
Petition forms are available at your Class Center and on the Junior Class Center Web site or the Senior Class Center Web site. Depending on your request, supporting documentation may be required in addition to the petition form.
*Petitions are reviewed every Monday morning by the Committee and therefore must be submitted to your appropriate Class Center by noon on the preceding Friday. You will be notified via e-mail of the Committee's decision. It is imperative that your petition be thorough and clear. Incomplete or missing information will result in a delayed decision by the Committee.
