Columbia College Advising
The Basics
To earn the Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College you must:
- Complete the Columbia College Core Curriculum
- Satisfy specific requirements for your major and/or concentration
- Earn 124 points
You must register for at least 12 points per semester, and may not register for more than 22 points per semester without approval from the Committee on Academic Standing. You are expected to complete all requirements within 8 terms.
The Core Curriculum
Students are required to complete Literature Humanities, University Writing, and Frontiers of Science in their first year and usually complete Contemporary Civilization in their second year.
Majors
If you are considering a major in the humanities and social sciences, you should in your first two years take a combination of Core courses and introductory-level courses in disciplines that interest you and that you would like to explore as potential majors or concentrations.
If you are considering a major in the sciences, you must focus on the required introductory science and math courses in your first two years.
Students who are undecided should talk to their dean about choosing classes that will allow them to narrow their choices. You should also spend some time reading the CC Bulletin online, meeting with faculty, and exploring the courses offered by various departments and the requirements of each potential major.
Major Declaration takes place during the second semester of sophomore year.
Electives
Electives are any courses that do not fulfill Core or major requirements. For undecided students, some courses taken during the search for a major may end up being “electives”. For students who have already decided on a major or concentration, an elective may be a class taken for fun in an unrelated discipline. The number of elective courses one takes may depend on the intensity of one’s major requirements.
