Columbia Center for Archaeology Open House Friday, October 2nd 12.30-2pm 954 Schermerhorn Extension If you are interested in declaring a major or concentration in archaeology, or even if you're just taking an archaeology class, you are invited to come along to our Open House to meet faculty, students, and have a tour of our facilities. Monday, October 5, 2009 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Philosophy 301 Have you ever used the wrong water glass? Do you wonder what you should say to someone at a professional event? This program will help students entering any industry put their best foot forward by teaching some basic guidelines for how to conduct themselves at professional events, both inside and outside the workplace. Kerry Preston of Image Dynamics will lead this workshop. She facilitates training seminars and provides coaching for clients, which include Hilton Hotels, Merck, and Estée Lauder.

***********First Come, First Served*********** Dear Students: Are you interested in writing short stories, poems, memoirs, and novels? Have you been wanting to experiment with a new form? Sign up for INTRO! INTRO is a FREE non-credit creative writing workshop taught by graduate students in the School of the Arts. These introductory peer workshops are the perfect no-pressure way to try something new and receive feedback from your fellow students. Course Descriptions Speed Writing Mondays, October 5th-October 26th 6:30 pm-8:30 pm, Dodge 413 Instructor: Carla Blumenkranz This class is focused on practicing writing within time limits. We'll jump start our writing with quick readings, prompts, and exercises and respond to each others' work by the end of each two-hour class. All genres welcome.
Fundamentals of Crafting a Short Story Wednesdays, October 7th-October 29th 6:00 pm-8:00 pm, Dodge 413 Instructor: Karolina Waclawiak We will look at the most important elements of storytelling - character, setting, dialogue, tension, POV. We will look at how certain authors have chosen to artfully solve the problem of creating fresh approaches to fiction. We will also look at how authors have created flawed characters battling the human condition and how they function within the narrative. We will be doing in class writing assignments based on the following authors' work: Lydia Davis, Christine Schutt, A.M. Homes, George Saunders, Denis Johnson, Patricia Volk, Tim O'Brien, Junot Diaz, Sam Lipsyte, Joyce Carol Oates, Ernest Hemingway, John Cheever and others. We will also be reading and critiquing students' work. There will be an opportunity to have 2-3 pieces submitted by each student for critique.

CC/SEAS Tutoring Service-Tutors Needed

The CC/SEAS Tutoring Service is seeking qualified and motivated sophomores, juniors and seniors - as well as Columbia University graduate students - to serve as tutors. The position is paid and offers flexible hours based on the tutor's schedule. Tutors must have over a 2.5 GPA and a B or better in the course(s) to be tutored.

CAVA Information Sessions and Recruitment

CAVA Attention to those interested in becoming and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and joining Columbia University EMS (CAVA): Columbia University EMS is holding two information sessions during the first week of school. Wednesday (September 9th) and Thursday (September 10th) at 8PM in 702 Hamilton. Attendance to one of these information sessions is mandatory for those who would like to apply for either a CAVA sponsored EMT-B course or a probationary membership. The executive board of CAVA will be present at these meetings to give you an overview as well as answer any questions you may have. Also, for those of you who are interested in joining CAVA for Fall 2009, you will be signing up for an interview which will take place this weekend, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
