CPS Student Life Support Groups – Fall 2013

Please contact group leaders for more information and to schedule an initial group interview, unless otherwise indicated. Please note:  Several groups listed below do not yet have a set time.  The clinicians leading these groups will be scheduling the group meetings at a time that best accommodates the majority of students who express interest in attending.

Adult ADHD
The Adult ADHD Group is a Cognitive-Behavioral treatment program consisting of 10 sessions which address core symptoms. The class teaches proven strategies for managing ADHD, in addition to medication.  Each member of the group will use a manual and develop new skills for better organization and planning, reducing distractibility, and enhancing adaptive thinking. Speak with your psychologist or psychiatrist to be referred to the group.  Sessions begin September 24th.

Bereavement Group
A weekly drop-in group for undergraduate and graduate students who have lost family or friends close to them.  Group will focus on learning and strengthening coping strategies and getting support from others who are also sad, angry, overwhelmed, confused, numb, and hurt, among other feelings.

Distress Tolerance Group
This group is open to graduate and undergraduate students who are experiencing anxiety, difficulty coping with strong emotions and who are motivated to increase self-observation and practice relaxation techniques in a supportive environment.

Getting Things Done
This support group is for students who have a stalled thesis, incompletes or are simply not performing up to their potential due to procrastination and poor time management. The group acts as a community of support and accountability. Members will have the opportunity to learn to break free from the negative patterns that may be keeping them from accomplishing their personal and professional goals. Participants will learn cognitive behavioral techniques that can increase efficiency, effectiveness, competence and confidence thereby improving their ability to get things done.

Making Peace with Food
This is a psychoeducational support group open to undergraduate and graduate students (both men and women) who struggle with their relationship with food and are preoccupied with their shape or weight.  Each week, the group will cover topics relevant to eating concerns with the goal of developing a more peaceful relationship with food and their bodies.  Members will also learn alternative ways to cope with difficult feelings without relying on food.  This is a time-limited group which will run for 8 sessions in the fall semester.

Public Speaking:  Learn to Speak with Confidence
This program will help you develop greater comfort when speaking in class.  Learn how to connect to the audience and build your overall effectiveness as a public speaker in this 3 session monthly program.

Relationships 101 Group
The purpose of this group is to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where students can work
together on managing overwhelming emotions that may come up, especially in the context of interpersonal relationships.  An open-ended process-group format will be supplemented with specific DBT skills.  This group is not time-limited and there are opportunities for new members to join at any time.

Substance Use Concerns Group
Two groups are offered, each for undergraduate and graduate students who are concerned about their substance use.  We will discuss how substances impact one’s life and learn skills to cope with changing patterns of use.  Participants who are in various stages of concern are encouraged to attend.

Women of Color Support Group
This group is designed for women of color (both graduate and undergraduate) who are looking for a group experience to discuss issues such as relationships, managing stress, body image, family of origin issues, trauma, experiences with oppression, asking for what you need, and developing a personal identity.  This group will offer a safe, confidential place to discuss these issues with other women of color.
