KCJS Summer Program in Advanced and Classical Japanese/Critical Languages Scholarship Program

The Kyoto Consortium of Japanese Studies (KCJS) is pleased to announce the second year of its Summer Program in Advanced and Classical Japanese. This six-week program offers intensive training in advanced and classical Japanese for highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students who have completed three years of Japanese or the equivalent. Eight points of credit are awarded on a Columbia University transcript upon completion of the program. Language instruction will be provided by the regular faculty of KCJS, which is now in its 20th year as a study abroad program in Kyoto, and by visiting faculty from member schools of the KCJS consortium. Classes will be small, with 5-7 students in each of the three sections of modern Japanese, and an anticipated 8-12 in classical Japanese. Field trips, guest lectures, and other activities that utilize Kyoto's rich cultural resources complement classroom instruction. The application deadline is March 1, 2010. IMPORTANT NOTE: KCJS will also be operating an intensive summer language institute in advanced Japanese under the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program, supported by the U. S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered under the auspices of American Councils for International Education. This program, which will begin in the summer of 2010, is separate from the regular KCJS Summer Program, and requires a separate application to CLS, for which the deadline is December 18, 2009.
