Course readings will include texts centered around the pre-Islamic poetic traditions of Arabia; some of the major themes of the Quran and the impact of the emergence of Islam on the Arabic language and classical Arabic literature; the poetics and stylistics of classical court, love and wine poetry; satirical prose and rhymed prose genres; and the key motifs of allegorical tales and the "1001 Nights." No prior knowledge of Arabic is required.
