New Language Requirement Option: Catalan

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is pleased to announce that, beginning in fall 2009, it will offer a full complement of language and culture courses in Catalan. Undergraduate students will now be able to fulfill the College's language requirement with Catalan; graduate students will be able to learn the language if it is appropriate to their intellectual focus. Catalan is the language of Cataluña, the most culturally prominent autonomous region of Spain. Over seven million people speak Catalan in the provinces of northeastern Spain, Andorra, and the Balearic islands, whose cultural capital is the awe-inspiring metropolis of Barcelona, a city that was the context for some of the most daring and innovative works produced by the fin-de-siècle international phenomenon of Modernism.
