The Office of the President is pleased to invite you to the first University Lecture of the school year given by the new provost Claude M. Steele Provost of the University and Professor of Psychology Tuesday, September 29, 2009 6:30 p.m. Rotunda, Low Memorial Library "Identity and Stereotype Threat: Their Nature and What To Do About Them at School and Work" Drawing on material from his upcoming book, Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us, Claude Steele shares the experiments and studies that show, repeatedly, that exposing subjects to stereotypes—merely reminding a group of female math majors about to take a math test, for example, that women are considered naturally inferior to men at math—impairs their performance in the area affected by the stereotype. Steele offers insight into how we form our senses of identity and lays out a plan for mitigating the negative effects of “stereotype threat” and reshaping American identities. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience, as well as a reception in honor of Provost Steele.
