Your CSA Peer Advisers are back for another semester of peer advising.  We have switched it up a bit this semester by adding more afternoon times (during CSA Walk-in Advising).  We are continuing on the Lerner ramps and Monday night in 403 Lerner from 6-8pm.

Peer Advisers Share the Love (2/14)

The Peer Advisers are going to be sharing their love and advice with students on Valentine’s Day!

Stop by the Lerner ramps on Thursday from 2pm- 4pm to chat with them and take home a bag of sweet treats.

CSA Peer Advisers

The Center for Student Advising (CSA) has launched a new Peer Advising program for the 2012-2013 academic year. CSA Peer Advisers (PAs) are outstanding junior or senior students from Columbia College and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science who work during New Student Orientation and throughout the academic year to supplement the services offered by CSA.  This exciting new program was created in response to student demand/feedback from CSA’s 2011 assessment and is a terrific expansion of the services available to students.

What will Peer Advising achieve?

Peer Advising will supplement the services offered by the Center for Student Advising.  Peer Advisers will offer social, academic, and emotional support and help students navigate and connect with resources at Columbia College and Columbia Engineering.  Peer Advising will enhance the student experience, build community within the student body, and create opportunities for leadership.

Why Peer Advising?

PAs can provide a first-hand account of Core and course requirements, major options, and extracurricular activities. Some students feel more comfortable meeting with a fellow student than with an adult, and thus the Peer Advisers can help build a bridge to advising and resources at Columbia. Peer Advisers will also offer additional hours of availability (after 5 pm), both in person and via online chat. 

Guidelines for the Program

Peer Advisers will supplement the professional advising offered by the advisers in the CSA.  Eight PAs have been hired: six from CC and two from SEAS.  The PAs come from across all programs and majors and will advise across disciplines. PAs received extensive training in August and will receive supplemental training throughout the academic year.  In 2012-13, PAs will hold office hours on Monday to Wednesday from 5 - 8 pm in the Center for Student Advising (403 Lerner), supervised by an Advising Dean. On Thursdays, PAs will hold advising hours from 1 - 4 pm on the Lerner ramps. PAs assisted the advisers during NSOP and will continue to be involved through email, online chats, publicizing CSA-sponsored events, and social media outreach.

Peer Advisers are in good disciplinary and academic standing and were carefully selected for their leadership capacity, maturity, and academic excellence.  They have demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students and administrators, and the capacity for discretion, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
