Summer Study for Columbia College Students

Taking Summer Courses Through Columbia

Credit for summer school is normally given to College students only for courses taken in the Columbia Summer Session. You do not need special permission or approval; however, if you plan to take any courses towards your major, you must consult with your major department.

Point Limit: No more than 8 points in any Summer Session period or in overlapping periods, and a maximum of 16 points for the entire summer.

Please note: Not all courses in the Columbia Summer Session Bulletin are creditable at Columbia College. Consult the list available in 208 Hamilton or the Junior Senior Advising Center to verify which courses are acceptable.

You may register for summer courses at Columbia either on-line or in person during the assigned registration time in the spring. For more information visit the website for the School of Continuing Education: http://www.ce.columbia.edu/summer/

Taking Summer Courses Elsewhere

CC Students who wish to receive credit for Summer School courses taken outside Columbia should understand that permission is normally given ONLY for one of three reasons:

  1. the student has fallen behind in credits (*please see below for clarification)
  2. the student must have the course as a prerequisite for a course that must be taken in the fall for the fulfillment of degree requirements
  3. the student plans to take an intensive language course

Before enrolling in a summer course, you must get approval from your dean in the Junior Senior Advising Center. To be eligible for credit transfer, a summer course must be offered at an accredited four-year college and it must be equivalent to a course offered at Columbia College.

In addition, if you want to take a course to count towards your major/concentration you must also get the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) for your department. For example, if you are majoring in political science and need to take a course for credit towards your major, you must get it approved by the DUS for the Political Science Department at Columbia College beforehand. If you do not get the approval of the appropriate department at Columbia College for your summer course, then this course will not be recognized as fulfilling any of the requirements for a major or a concentration by that department. Please note that other restrictions may also apply. Read the list below carefully to determine what restrictions may apply in your case.

PLEASE NOTE:

Remember: In order to receive credit for courses taken elsewhere during the summer, you must receive a grade of B- or higher and take courses for a letter grade (P/F credit is not acceptable). In addition, you may take no more than 16 credits in one summer.

Be aware that the following restrictions also apply:

  • All language courses at introductory or intermediate levels may be approved only conditionally. Credit for language is dependent upon a placement test to be administered by the department at Columbia in the fall. It is the student's responsibility to contact the department for testing.
  • Students are considered to be falling behind in credits if they are under 93 credits at the end of the junior year. Students taking classes elsewhere to make up for a credit deficit will only be able to transfer back those credits which are needed. (That is, if you are behind by 2 credits, you will only be able to transfer back 2 credits of a 3 credit course.)
  • If the course is being used to meet any related or distribution course requirement for the major, you must obtain the permission of both the department at Columbia College that teaches that discipline and the major department.
  • After completion of the course, please request that a transcript be sent to the Junior Senior Advising Center, not to the Registrar.
  • Students who plan to study abroad in the summer should see their class dean immediately. Departmental and, where appropriate, major departmental approval will be necessary. Study abroad in summer is subject to the same restrictions as summer study in the United States.
  • It is never possible to receive credit for professional courses (i.e. journalism, education, law, etc.) taken outside Columbia.
  • Transfer students may only earn a maximum of 64 credits outside of Columbia College.
