Taking Summer Classes Through Columbia
As with other academic plans and decisions you make, you must meet with your faculty advisor in your major department to discuss your wish to take courses during the summer. You may register for summer courses at Columbia either on-line or in person during the assigned registration time in the spring. Taking Summer Courses Elsewhere

P lease keep in mind that you cannot take any foundation courses outside of Columbia.

Your request for credit approval must be accompanied by a photocopy of the school's bulletin description of the course and the course outline or syllabus. Approval may not be granted if these materials are not attached.

You must secure approval to take summer courses before you register for them.

To be eligible for credit transfer, a summer course must be offered at an accredited four-year college and it must be equivalent to a course offered at Columbia. You must earn at least a C in order for credit to transfer for any approved course.

You may earn no more than 12 points of credit for course work in any one summer. This total includes any courses you take at Columbia.
To get approval of a summer course, you need the signature of your class dean, the signature of your faculty advisor, and the signature of a faculty representative of the department which teaches this subject at SEAS or Columbia College.

A transcript for approved courses should be sent to the Junior Senior Advising Center upon completion of the course.

Students who plan to study abroad in the summer should see their class dean immediately. Departmental and, where appropriate, major departmental approval will be necessary. Study abroad in summer is subject to the same restrictions as summer study in the United States.
