"Love Love. Hate Hate." Campaign

The Office of Multicultural Affairs is partnering with the offices of New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn to bring the Love Love. Hate Hate. campaign to Columbia University. Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Quinn launched the city-wide campaign, which celebrates diversity and condemns acts of hate and bias, in October 2010. Columbia will be the first university to bring the campaign to its campus.

Expanding the City’s efforts, Columbia’s Love Love. Hate Hate. campaign promotes inclusion, unity, respect, and dialogue among all members of the campus community. It also underscores the University’s commitment to creating a learning environment free from discrimination and harassment, and address the impact hate crimes and bias-related actions have on campus communities. Columbia’s campaign strives to increase awareness of University resources, including the Bias Response Protocol, for students who witness or are the victims of acts of hate on campus.

More information can be found on the LLHH Press Release (Dec. 2010).

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

PROMOTING ALLYSHIP

In addition to understanding the deep impact that acts of hate and bias can have on individuals and our entire campus community, it is just as important to acknowledge the positive acts of allyship and support that happens everyday at Columbia.

Students, faculty, and staff can email an act of allyship on campus that they want to highlight, promote an event that demonstrates community collaboration, or share how someone has been a great personal ally to them. We will post it on our Twitter, loveloveCU. Please limit descriptions to 140 characters.

PAST CAMPUS EVENTS

Three Religions: Same Contradictory God?
Wednesday, February 2, 2011
8pm
Roone Auditorium, Lerner Hall
Co-hosted by Columbia/ Barnard Hillel, Muslim Students Association, and the Veritas Forum. Co-sponsors include Office of the University Chaplain and CC/SEAS Office of Multicultural Affairs' Diversity Initiative Grant.

In the spirit of the campaign, from the event organizers: "Oftentimes forums in this format become debates or arguments between differing sides, but the purpose of this event is to explore the ways in which each of these religions reconciles a message of judgment with a message of love. By educating the Columbia campus about true religious beliefs of the Abrahamic faiths, we are encouraging tolerance through multicultural discussion... This forum aims to better equip the Columbia community with the ability to differentiate between justified fear and intolerance; understanding and prejudice; love and hate. "

SisterCircle: Our Love is Our Strength
Friday, February 18, 2011
5-7pm
Intercultural Resource Center

Come and sit with us to discuss our individual loves and passions; the strength that we acquire from the ones we love and the ones that love us, and the deep passions that drive our goals in life, school, and work. Sometimes, sharing and hearing experiences can become great motivators to building new goals and not feeling alone in your pursuit for them.

Sister Circle is a program that brings together women of color (those who may identify as Asian, Black/African, Latino, Native, and/or Middle Eastern heritage) at Columbia University and Barnard College to foster a sense of community and solidarity. Serving as a resource group that is inclusive of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff of color, members create a support network to encourage each other's academic and professional success and personal growth.
