The summer program at Duke University offers talented students the resources to present strong credentials for admission to medical school. By providing a solid foundation in the pre-medical sciences, math, writing, and learning skills, the program prepares its scholars for success. Instruction in ethics, professionalism, interviewing skills, clinical experience, and individual advising complete the toolbox. Program scholars will leave well prepared to complete their undergraduate education and advance to health-professions education.

Finances

  • Meals: Breakfast and dinner will be provided in Duke University West Campus residence hall dining room; lunch at any on-campus eatery.

  • Travel Assistance: Up to $300 toward travel by air, bus or train (based on need and for those more than 50 miles away from Durham, NC).

  • Stipend: Disbursed in 2 installments (week 3 and upon completion of the program).

Living

  • Housing: Each student will be housed in a double occupancy, air-conditioned room in a Duke University residence hall.

  • Health Insurance: Not provided; however, SMDEP at Duke will pay the Student Health fee which covers treatment for acute illness and injury, chronic illness flares, allergy shots, diet and nutrition counseling, and access to psychological counseling.

  • Social Activities: Includes the American Dance Festival and Summer Festival of the Arts, skating, bowling, water park, movies, and more.

Eligibility: 
To be eligible for SMDEP, an applicant must: * be currently enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in college; * have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5; * be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa; and * not have previously participated in SMDEP. Other factors considered in the admissions process include whether an applicant: * identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine and/or dentistry (as defined independently by each program site); * comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background; * has demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations; and * submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation. Each SMDEP site makes its admissions decisions on a "first come, first served" basis, therefore applying as early as possible increases your chance of being selected at your designated program site(s). Students should contact their school's health professions advisor or career counselor for advice on choosing which summer to apply to SMDEP and for other information about a career in the health professions.
