Committee Position Descriptions

Thank you for your interest in becoming a 2015 Committee Member for the New Student Orientation Program (NSOP)! The application will open on Monday, November 24th 2014.

The NSOP Committee consists of five students from Barnard College, five students from Columbia College and Columbia Engineering, and one student from the School of General Studies.  These student leaders have an integral role in the transition process for incoming students beginning in the Spring, and continuing throughout their first week on campus.

Below you will find the descriptions for the Columbia College and Columbia Engineering student committee member positions.

NSOP Student Chair

  • Prepare all aspects of the orientation program in conjunction with the Undergraduate Student Life and serve as liaison to other organizations and offices involved with the orientation program.
  • Coordinate day-to-day work of other committee members and oversee the development of the orientation theme, media, communications, and strategy in conjunction with the Student Engagement, Barnard Student Life and General Studies Student Life staff.
  • Applicants should have experience managing groups and projects.
  • The NSOP Chair will work closely with the Barnard and General Studies Student Chair.
  • A $4,500.00 summer stipend with an additional $500 stipend which is provided for additional responsibilities along with summer housing.

Student Leader Coordinator

  • Responsible for the hiring process of Crew Chiefs (CCs) and Orientation Leaders (OLs) in conjunction with the Student Engagement and Barnard Student Life staff, as well as CC and OL training during the spring semester and prior to the beginning of NSOP.
  • Communicate with the CCs and OLs throughout the course of the summer.
  • Directly interact with CCs and OLs throughout week of NSOP. 
  • Assign new students to Orientation Leader groups.
  • Applicants should have experience working with spreadsheets and databases.
  • The Student Leader Coordinator will work closely with the Barnard Student Leader Coordinator.
  • A $4,500.00 summer stipend and summer housing.

Social Events Coordinator

  • Responsible for planning all social events during the week of NSOP, including the New York City event, Open Mic Night, Performance Showcase, late night campus programming and other events.
  • Applicants should have experience developing and implementing programs.
  • Experience implementing social programs is desirable, but not necessary. 
  • A $4,500.00 summer stipend and summer housing.

Academic & Educational Coordinator

  • Responsible for coordinating with other departments and organizations for all academic events during the week, including placement exams, library and computing info sessions, student advising scheduling, and other various informational sessions. 
  • Works directly with the Center for Student Advising in coordinating and implementing various academic programs. 
  • Implements all programming for Transfer, Visiting and Combined Plan (TVC) students, including move-in, information sessions, and social outings.
  • Directly communicates with incoming TVC students over the summer.
  • Applicants should have experience developing and implementing programs.
  • Experience with academic and/or educational programs is desirable, but not necessary.
  • A $4,500.00 summer stipend and summer housing.

Social Media & Marketing Coordinator

  • Be proficient in social media use, specifically: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and various blogging platforms.
  • Applicants should also be comfortable with photography, videography and editing.
  • Support the staff and Committee on various projects including raising awareness of NSOP, marketing specific events, and capturing highlights of NSOP through photography and film.
  • Experience with Photoshop and/or InDesign is desirable.
  • A $4,500.00 summer stipend and summer housing.
