Summer Advising

Congratulations on your acceptance into Columbia! The Division of Student Affairs welcomes you and your families to the Columbia community.

To introduce you to student life at Columbia, we will host a series of Summer Advising sessions this summer for incoming first-year and transfer students. We encourage you to attend one of these sessions prior to your arrival on campus this August. Staff, alumni, and current students and parents will be on hand to help guide your academic choices, welcome you into the Columbia community, and provide valuable advice and support to your family. Register here.

A Note to Incoming First-Year Students: Please register to attend any of the listed sessions.

A Note to Incoming Transfer Students: Please register to attend the session on either July 9 (CC) or July 12 (SEAS) in New York City. On these two dates, advisers will lead sessions to address the specific academic and advising needs of transfer students.

A Note to Incoming Combined Plan Students: You will be contacted directly by your adviser to discuss your academic questions. Combined Plan students do not need to attend a summer session.

If you are unable to attend Summer Advising, please note that similar advising sessions will be offered throughout the New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) in late August when students arrive on campus.  Students will be assigned to an advising dean in mid-August and will have ample opportunity to ask questions prior to arriving on campus.

Site-specific information and directions will be included in your confirmation e-mail. For more information or questions about registering, please e-mail summeradvising@columbia.edu.

Welcome and Introductions

Advising Sessions for Incoming Students
Incoming students will meet with an Advising Dean from the Center for Student Advising to gain a valuable orientation to academic life at Columbia.  Students will learn about academic and community expectations, receive an in-depth explanation of degree requirements, begin planning for fall classes, and obtain resource and contact information to use over the summer.  This session is an important step toward understanding the first-year undergraduate curriculum and planning course selections.  It is also a great way to meet new friends in the class of 2013!

Panel Discussion for Parents and Families
While students attend an advising sessions, parents and family members will participate in a panel discussion that focuses on the transition to college.  Following brief remarks, a representative from the Office of Parent and Family Programs will lead a discussion on the transition to college and resources for students and families at Columbia. Current parents will then address the most frequently asked questions, share thoughts, and offer helpful suggestions during the panel presentation.  Panelists will be current Columbia parents and students.  The program also provides an opportunity for families of entering students to meet one another.
