Dental Opportunities for Pre-Health Students

 


Connecticut

University of Connecticut Health Center

Description: Medical/Dental Preparatory Program (MDPP) is designed in two tracks. Track one is for students who will be taking the August MCAT or DAT. The program will focus on test preparation. Track two is designed for all other students and consists of basic medical sciences course emphasizing essential principles of cell and molecular biology correlated to problem based learning case studies. There is a $1000 stipend; room and board is also provided.

Eligibility: Undergraduate sophomores, juniors, seniors, or recent graduates of pre-professional schools who have traditionally been underrepresented in the health professions. Applicants should have completed some college coursework in biology and chemistry (preferably through organic chemistry). Previous laboratory experience is desirable.

Duration: 6 weeks

Description: The Student Research Program (SRP) is designed to provide a rewarding research experience for DDS and Dental Hygiene candidates. This experience will provide an insider's perspective on research so that you can more fully appreciate the scientific and technological advances that influence the dental profession. The SRP is a competitive research fellowship. If accepted into the program, participants are provided with a stipend for the summer as well as a modest budget for materials. In the SRP, you will have the opportunity to: - conduct research with a faculty member and research team, examine scientific literature and its relevance to dentistry, present your findings at local, as well as possibly national and international, scientific meetings, develop skills that will assist you later, regardless of whether you choose a career of clinical or academic dentistry and co-author a publication if appropriate.

North Carolina

University of North Carolina School of Medicine Medical Education Development Program
Chapel Hill, NC

Description: The MED Program provides a demanding academic core on the level of beginning medical/dental studies in Gross Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Microbiology/Immunology and Clinical Biochemistry. It also may include a special dental theory and technique course for pre-dental students as well as individualized work in learning, study, reading and test-taking skills. Seminars, workshops, pre-professional counseling and orientation to the medical and dental school environment will also be provided.

Eligibility: Criteria for selection are based on a number of factors including 1) showing educational promise and a strong commitment to a health career but lack of past opportunities (educational, social and economic) that may place a student from a nontraditional background at a disadvantage in seeking admission and successfully entering medical or dental school. 2) Must have completed at least 3 years of college coursework including Organic Chemistry.

Duration: 8-9 weeks

Description: Summer Pre-Dental Enrichment Program provides college students with an opportunity to prepare successfully for the DAT, strengthen their science background, and broaden their interest in biomedical/clinical sciences. The curriculum consists of five core courses designed to augment the student’s knowledge base for taking the DAT, and workshops such as diversity training, mock admissions interviews, extramural rotations, and interacting with mentors including dental students, faculty and staff. Housing and a stipend of $2240 is provided.

Eligibility: US citizens/permanent residents that have completed 60 hours of college with a GPA of 2.75 or above by the end of spring semester. 24 semester hours of science (8 hrs of general chemistry, 8 hrs of biology, and 8 hrs of organic chemistry) must also be completed.

Duration: 8 weeks
Deadline: Postmark January 31
