Description: The Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summer pre-college programs are offered at colleges and universities throughout the nation. The programs are three weeks long, and students take only one course. This intense immersion in a subject has proven to be both challenging and stimulating for students of high ability. In addition to their course work, students enjoy a rich experience outside the classroom. They live on campus under the supervision of resident assistants and participate in activities ranging from sports, to arts and crafts, to music, to special events such as dances and a student talent show. Staff provides a safe and supportive environment appropriate for pre-collegiate students. The starting salary for instructors ranges from $1900-$2900 per 3-week session, depending on education and experience. Instructional assistants earn $950 per 3-week session, and residential assistants earn $1050 per 3-week session. Salaries for administrators vary by position. Description: The Nathan Schnaper Cancer Research Summer Intern Program matches undergraduate students with MSG Cancer Center faculty who will serve as their mentors for the summer internship. Interns will conduct research in one of many ongoing areas of investigation including cancer drug resistance, signal transduction, programmed cell death, molecular pharmacology, angiogenesis, and carcinogenesis. In addition to laboratory work on their specific projects, interns learn about diverse aspects of cancer research through weekly discussions with the research mentors. Description: The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program is for students considering a research career in pharmacology and toxicology. The program provides an excellent opportunity for each of these students to become immersed in a research project using cutting-edge techniques to address an important health-related question. Each student is mentored by a departmental faculty member and may work closely with graduate students and/or postdoctoral trainees in the mentor’s laboratory. Research interests of departmental faculty include neuropharmacology, neurotoxicology, cardiovascular pharmacology, immunopharmacology, carcinogenesis, hepatic and pulmonary phamacology and toxicology, and gastrointestinal pharmacology. LEVEL 1 is designed for students who have just begun pre-professional studies and have completed at least one year of college including one semester of introductory biology and one semester of introductory math. It consists of 2 courses: Intro to Microbiology and Intro to Organic Chem., as well as workshops and seminars.
LEVEL 2 is designed for students who have completed at least 2 semesters of general biology plus one semester of college math. The curriculum includes: advanced biology, generally either Intro to Genetics or Intro to Biochemistry, Lab in Genetics or Microbial Physiology and either Intro to Organic Chem or MCAT Science review plus workshops and seminars.
LEVEL 3 is designed for students who are at or near the point of applying to professional school and have completed nearly all pre-professional science requirements. The curriculum includes: Advanced biology, generally either Intro to Immunology or Intro to Neuroscience, either MCAT Science Review or another advanced biology course plus workshops, research and seminars.
This program can be taken for college credit.
Eligibility: The program has been designed specifically for those students belonging to racial or ethnic groups currently underrepresented in medicine and other biomedical careers. Special consideration will also be given to students who come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds regardless of their race or ethnic background. Because the Biomedical Careers Program is supported by NJ state institutions, priority will be given to students enrolled at Rutgers University, EOF-eligible and students who are legal residents of NJ.

Description: Steamboat Foundation offers a truly unique work experience to exceptional students who might not otherwise have access to influential leaders in their chosen field of interest. The selected Steamboat Scholar will work closely with a Columbia College alumnus, Dr. David Altchek, Associate Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Under the direction of Dr. Altchek, the Steamboat Scholar will participate in ongoing research, clinical evaluations and observation in the operating room. The Scholar will be assigned a project at the beginning of the summer for presentation at the end of the internship.
The Steamboat Foundation will award a $12,000 grant to the selected Steamboat Scholar for the 10 week period, payable in installments over that period. Scholars are subject to the applicable sponsor’s company employee rules.

Description: Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is designed to expose students to clinical observations, optometric orientation, site visits, and group sessions on optometry school and learning skills seminars. Students will learn to develop and present a research project. Students will be given a stipend of $250 a day to defray the cost of transportation and lunch. Books and supplies will be provided free of charge.

Description: The Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program for Premedical Minority Students is designed to give participants deeper insights into the wide range of options that exist for minority physicians. Through the experiences of laboratory or clinical research, classroom lectures, seminars on public health issues, practical discussions by physicians from different specialties, and observations of hospital care, the college students gain a clearer picture of both the demands and opportunities they will encounter in medicine. Students receive a $140/week cost of living allowance and are housed rent-free in the dormitory but are required to pay for meals and living expenses.
Eligibility: Program is designed for underrepresented minority premed students who preferably have already taken biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and physics. Preference is given to students with a grade point average of 3.0 and above.
