Residing in the Living-Learning Center (LLC), housed in Hartley and Wallach Halls, is unlike any other residential experience at Columbia. The LLC is the only all-class year integrated residential community on campus; this unique living arrangement can ease the transition to college and provide guidance regarding community, involvement in life at Columbia, class selection, exam preparation, and room selection. Close-knit relationships between first-years, sophomore, juniors, seniors, alumni, faculty, administrators, and visiting guests are the foundation of the LLC.
The LLC is more than just a place to live. Resident involvement is integral in developing and sustaining a dynamic community. Resident input allows the LLC to continue monthly alumni and faculty events, which touch on a wide variety of subjects of interest. The LLC's distinguished guests become mentors in the academic and cultural life of the college without the pressure of grades or papers. The creativity of residents, staff, and the Dean-in-Residence provides abundant opportunities for fun. Social events have included student run coffee-house performances, weekly study breaks, and larger monthly programs such as Dance Lessons, Ice Cream-Making, and trips to New York City Jazz Clubs. Student programming is supported by the Resident Adviser who serves as the primary community builder.
As a Columbia student, you will have countless choices to make in all facets of experience. Consider the following highlights of the LLC as you determine your housing preference:
- The opportunity to interact with students across all four class years
- Interactions with distinguished faculty, focused on research and current events outside of the classroom
- Intimate dinners with Columbia alumni and exploration of internship and career options
