Living & Learning Center
Message from the Associate Director
Prospective students, welcome to the Living-Learning Center (LLC) housed in Hartley and Wallach Halls. My name is Scott Helfrich, Associate Director for the Office of Residential Programs, and I have the privilege of working with the LLC.
Residing in the LLC is unlike any other residential experience you can have at Columbia. We are the only all-class integrated residential community on campus; this unique living arrangement can ease your transition to college and provide guidance regarding community, involvement in life at Columbia, class selection, exam preparation, and room selection. Close-knit relationships between first-years, sophomore, juniors, seniors, alumni, faculty, administrators, and visiting guests are the hallmark foundation of the LLC.
The LLC is more than just a place to live - we need your involvement! You are integral in developing and sustaining our dynamic community. Your input will allow us to continue our tradition of monthly alumni and faculty events, which touch on a wide variety of subjects of interest to you. Our distinguished guests become mentors in the academic and cultural life of the college without the pressure of grades or papers.
Do not worry, living in the LLC is not all about academics. The creativity of you, your fellow students, staff, Dean-in-Residence and Faculty-in-Residence make abundant opportunities for fun. Social events have included student run coffee-house performances, weekly study breaks, larger monthly programs such as Dance Lessons, Ice Cream-Making, and trips to New York City Jazz Clubs. Student programming is supported by the Resident Adviser who serves as the primary community builder.
Grygorii Yefremov, a first-year SEAS ’10 student, chose to live in the LLC because, “it was the only residence which officially promoted a living and sharing experience with upper-class students on a daily basis. I can frankly tell that I benefited a lot from that, especially in the very beginning of being here at Columbia. No doubt, it was the best and the most accessible source of information about how different things work here.”
As a Columbia student, you will have countless choices to make in all facets of your life, including; classes, club involvement, what neighborhood to explore and how to navigate this new freedom in NYC. One of your first choices involves where to live on campus. Consider the following highlights of the LLC as you determine your housing preference.
- You have the opportunity to live in place where you interact with students across all four class years, first-years to seniors.
- Be part of a community that offers support, advice, respect, and a feeling of home.
- Get to know and discuss with distinguished faculty their research and current events outside of the classroom.
- Attend an intimate dinner with a Columbia alumnus and alumna and start exploring internship and career options.
Be involved in your residential community – choose the LLC.
We are very proud of the community in the LLC and hope you choose to join us.
