Faculty-in-Residence
Faculty-in-Residence Profile

Andrew Smyth and his family live in Hartley 9B. In August 2007 he began as the new Faculty-in-Residence for the LLC. He has been on the Faculty at Columbia since 1998, in the Department of Civil Engineering & Engineering Mechanics in SEAS. His research focuses on the way that civil engineering structures, in particular bridges, vibrate and how to use that information for condition monitoring. He was an undergraduate at Brown University, received his Masters at Rice, and his PhD at University of Southern California. Having lived for a considerable time in Ireland, Germany and different parts of the US, NYC and Hartley 9B is home to him. In his spare time he enjoys good espresso, road cycling, soccer, rugby and jogging, as well a wide variety of music, and occasionally dusts off his fiddle and guitar. He very much enjoys talking with students outside the traditional classroom context and is therefore excited about being part of the LLC community.

His wife, Elizabeth Prewitt, whom he met at Brown, is a Trial Lawyer for the Antitrust Division of the US Dept. of Justice. In this capacity she prosecutes white collar crimes, typically involving collusion between competitors, bribery and kickback schemes. Elizabeth is quite passionate about cooking and eating, and in turn endures long jogs. In her former life she was a competitive rower.
Andrew and Elizabeth have two boys, Declan (4) and Niall (2) who make their presence known well in advance of formal introductions. Last, and he certainly feels not least, is Milou the cat.
