Southfield

Welcome to Southfield! Carman, John Jay and Furnald are the three residence halls which comprise this predominantly first-year community. Deb Pawlikowski is the Associate Director from the Office of Residential Programs with oversight of this area. In addition, each hall has a Graduate Assistant (GA), a Community Programming Assistant (CPA), and a Resident Advisor (RA) on nearly every floor. Deb and her student staff are here to enhance the out of classroom experience for residents to allow them to be successful in their transition in to Columbia, to become familiar with the Morningside Community, and to see what the greater community of NYC has to offer.

Carman is one of the only residence halls on campus exclusively available to first-year students.  Residents of Carman find its location convenient for accessing many of Columbia's resources. The building consists of 13 floors, divided into approximately 13 single-sex suites per floor.  These suites each contain one bathroom and two double-occupancy rooms.  In addition, Carman has one communal kitchen in the basement, a large social lounge, and laundry facilities as well as a computer lab on the first floor. Carman also houses the Office of Preprofessional Advising, the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP), the Fellowships Office, and a satellite office for Counseling and Psychological Services.

John Jay stands 15 stories high and is composed mainly of single occupancy rooms exclusively for first-year students. Each floor has a separate men’s and women’s bathroom that is shared by the residents. The lounges on each floor have cable TVs, and provide space for floor programming, socializing or studying. The University’s Primary Health Care Medical Services is located on the fourth floor.  The main dining hall on campus, John Jay dining hall, is located on the ground floor. JJ’s Place is conveniently located in the basement for late-night snacks.  The John Jay main lounge is a great place for large events, meetings, studying, or playing the grand piano.

Furnald houses first-years and sophomores within its 10 stories and boasts a hotel-like atmosphere with its corridor-style setting, which creates a great environment for the residents who live there to interact with each other. Each floor contains a separate men’s and women’s bathroom that the residents share. In addition, a large lounge is situated on every floor that has a sitting area with a cable television on one end, and a kitchen with two ovens and two sinks on the other end. A spacious main lounge on the first floor is conducive to studying, socializing, hall events, and student group performances. The office of Academic Success Programs is housed on the first floor and the CQA’s Stephen Donaldson lounge is located on the ground floor.
