Resident Adviser

The Office of Residential Programs employs 133 students as Resident Advisers (RAs) and Community Advisers (CAs). Among the entire population of 5,500 undergraduate students, our RAs and CAs emerge as leaders within the Columbia community. RAs develop a healthy community by focusing on the growth and development of each individual on their hall and promote an environment conducive to the overall wellness needs of residents. CAs are returning student staff members who use their experience to foster growth and development within their area staffs and support residential programming for their communities.

The Process

The Resident Adviser recruitment and selection is divided into two processes, a mini-selection process and the regular selection process.  Applicants, who observe the Sabbath, student athletes with scheduled games, and those studying abroad for the spring 2014 semester, must go through the mini-selection process on Friday, December 6, 2013 from 11:00am until 3:00pm.  Everyone else will participate in the regular selection process interview times scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 9:00am until 1:30pm or 12:00pm until 4:30pm.  More detailed information is listed below.

Mini-Selection Process:

The mini-selection process is strictly reserved for those students that cannot attend the regular selection process dates on Saturday, January 25, 2014, or for current Sophomore or Junior students interested in being considered for available Spring 2014 Resident Adviser positions.  Students who would qualify for the mini-selection process include those that observe the Sabbath, who will be studying abroad for the spring 2014 term, or athletes with scheduled games on Saturday, January 25 between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

Phase I – Information Session

You are required to attend an informational session between Thursday, November 14 and Sunday, November 24.  You cannot apply to become a RA without attending the full Information Session.

Phase II – Application

Mini-selection process applications are due by 9:00am on Monday, December 2, 2013.  This deadline is earlier than the regular selection process applications since your half-day interview will be on Friday, December 6, 2013.

Phase III – Half Day Interview

You will be required to participate in a half-day on-campus interview (including an individual interview and two group exercises) schedule for Friday, December 6, 2013 from 11:00am until 3:00pm.

Unless you are studying abroad in the spring 2014 term you are required to attend the Resident Adviser Fair scheduled for Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 7:00pm until 9:00pm.  The Resident Adviser Fair is an opportunity for perspective candidates to meet each Area’s current staff and become more familiar with that community.
