King’s Crown Awards 2007-08
The 2008 ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 1st, from 5:30-7:30pm. The annual King’s Crown Leadership Awards are presented to students who have demonstrated exemplary leadership through their involvement in student organizations and activities at Columbia University.
Gold, Silver, Bronze and Copper Crown Leadership Awards
A King’s Crown Awards Committee is assembled and charged with selecting recipients from among
students who have been active in at least one recognized student organization, and who, with
exemplary commitment and energy, have offered outstanding leadership to their groups and/or
to the community.
The King’s Crown Awards are in four categories:
Gold Crown winners must be seniors active for at least three years,
or seniors whose leadership for two years has been extraordinary. In addition, they
have made a significant impact or contribution in a student organization.
Silver Crown winners should be juniors or seniors active for at least two years.
In addition, they have demonstrated significant leadership for at least two years within
a student organization
Bronze Crowns winners are at least sophomore students who have
demonstrated significant leadership roles in their organization/s in their first two
years as student leaders
Copper Crowns winners are students from any academic year who have
demonstrated significant leadership roles in their organization/s in their first year as
student leaders.
Gold, Silver, and Bronze Crown Horizon winners are the students who
best exemplify the criteria for their category and are most on the brink of transcending that
category and reaching the next level of leadership. There is only one Horizon winner selected
per category.
Organization Achievement Leadership Award
The Organization Achievement Awards are offered in conjunction with
the King’s Crown Award to distinguish those student organizations and
student-led programs that have demonstrated exemplary leadership and have
had a significant impact on Columbia's campus and its surrounding community.
All members of the Columbia community are invited to nominate and select
the top five finalists for each category, for which the committee will
select the winners. Each organization that is voted in the top five will
have the opportunity to submit a written statement and select a member
to be interviewed by the King’s Crown committee to explain why the organization
should be chosen as the winner.
The Five Organizational Awards are:
The Impact Award: Awarded to those student organizations
or programs that have had a significant impact on the campus community.
The Alma Mater Award: Awarded to student organizations, which best
embody the ethic of community building at Columbia.
The Intergroup Award: Awarded to student organizations,
which promote collaboration among the various student organizations and
programs.
The Promise Award: Awarded to recently recognized as well
as established student organizations with the best potential for positive impact
upon the Columbia Campus.
The Best Program Award: Awarded to the student-led program that has
been most significant to the Columbia community.
Leadership Legend Award
In addition to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Crown Leadership Awards
and Organizational Achievement Awards presented each spring, a special
award has been created to honor a select group of seniors. This year,
students will be given the opportunity to nominate their peers, with final
winners to be selected by the King’s Crown committee.
The Leadership Legend Award would be presented to approximately 7-12
senior student leaders who have met the general qualifications of the
Gold Crown Award, and have further distinguished themselves in one of
the following areas:
Pioneer: as a student leader, the awardee has been
instrumental in the creation, revival or rehabilitation of a student organization,
a major event or program, and/or student policy.
Bridge Builder: as a student leader, the awardee has been
pivotal in establishing or supporting connections between student groups and/or
between student groups and the Administration.
Indelible Mark: as a student leader, the awardee has in some
capacity left an indelible mark on the Columbia community.
NEW: The Community Builder Award
This year, the KCLA Committee has introduced a new award for a senior in Columbia College, SEAS, or General Studies, that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to community building over his/her 4 year tenure at the University. Nominees may have assumed diverse leadership roles that span non-recognized student group participation, such as opportunities as Residential Advisors, athletes, members of the spirit organizations, administrative or departmental committees, administrative or departmental teams, and/or community service leaders in the New York City environs, to name a few. The affiliations should include organizations of at least 50 individuals with an impact attributable to community building. Three finalists will be selected to interview with the KCLA committee and one student will be selected as the award winner to attend the ceremony on May 1st.
The on-line nomination process for the KCLAs begins March 1st at 12pm and ends March 31st at 11:59pm. Click on the links below at any time during this period to nominate students for the Leadership Legend Awards, the Organizational Awards, and the new Community Builder Award.
