Incompletes

In rare instances, you can request a mark of Incomplete if you cannot complete your final course work or are unable to take a final examination due to incapacitating illness as certified by the University Health Service, of a serious family emergency, or because of circumstances of comparable gravity.

Unless granted an authorized Incomplete by the Committee of Academic Standing, you must complete all coursework within the bounds of a semester. If you wish to request an Incomplete you must follow the following steps:

  • Speak to your class dean in the Junior Senior Advising Center about the situation prior to the last session of the class.
  • Pick up a Requesting an Incomplete packet from your class dean
  • Complete the Incomplete Request form (one form per course).
  • Ask your instructor to complete the instructor approval form (one form per course).
  • Submit both forms and supporting documentation to the Junior Senior Advising Center for consideration by the Committee on Academic Standing.

Requests for incomplete course work must be submitted to the Junior Senior Advising Center by the last day of classes, or no later than the day before the final examination when a student is requesting permission to miss only the final exam and does not have any other unfinished work outstanding. Upon receipt of the incomplete form, the Committee will meet and inform you of the decision within one week. Note that final authorization requires the approval of both faculty member and the Committee on Academic Standing.

Students who are granted an incomplete in one or more classes are assigned a deadline for completion of the overdue work and/or a date on which a deferred exam must be taken. If you fail to meet the assigned deadline or miss the deferred examination, professors may calculate a grade based on the work you completed for the course.

Please Note:

If a professor turns in a grade of Incomplete that has not been approved by the Committee, the professor will be asked to calculate a grade for you based on the work that you submitted during the regular term.

For students in The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applies Science: if you fail to meet the assigned deadline or miss the deferred examination, the incomplete will be converted to an "F" on your transcript after one year.
