The Petition Process

If you are seeking an exception to an academic policy or regulation, you must petition the appropriate office.

  • Requests regarding Physical Education courses should be directed to Dr. Ken Torrey in the Physical Education Department, 332 Dodge Fitness Center, (212) 854-4001, kwt1@columbia.edu.

  • For CC students, requests concerning the Science Requirement, Major Cultures requirement, or course overlap should be submitted to the Office of the Dean, 208 Hamilton Hall.

  • For all other requests, you must petition the Committee on Academic Standing.

Actions requiring a petition include:

  • Taking less than 12 points in a semester

  • Taking more than the credit limit per semester- 22 credits for CC and 21 credits for SEAS

  • Dropping or adding courses after the deadliness.

  • Changing your grade option after the deadline (P/F, letter grade, R)

  • Remaining enrolled for an additional term to complete degree requirements

PLEASE NOTE:

This is not a comprehensive list of actions requiring a petition. You should speak with your class dean at the Junior Senior Advising Center if you are unsure of whether you need to petition.

Petition forms are available at either location of the Junior Senior Advising Center and on the downloadable forms for Juniors or the downloadable forms for Seniors. Depending on your request, supporting documentation may be required in addition to the petition form.

*Petitions are reviewed every Monday morning by the Committee and therefore must be submitted to the appropriate Junior Senior Advising Center location by noon on the preceding Friday. You will be notified via e-mail of the Committee's decision. It is imperative that your petition be thorough and clear. Incomplete or missing information will result in a delayed decision by the Committee.
