R Credit

R Credit for Internships

Students at Columbia College or The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science are eligible to receive R credit on their transcripts for successfully completed internships.

Students must stop by the Junior Senior Advising Center or download the form to fill out a “Request for Internship ‘R’ Credit” form.

Please note:

  • You will not be awarded the R credit (a notation on your transcript) until we receive official notice (a letter on letterhead) from your employer that you have successfully completed the internship.

  • Internship R credit is NOT academic credit. It does not affect your total number of credits needed for graduation, and, since you do not receive a grade, it does not affect your Grade Point Average.

R Credit for Academic Classes

The mark of "R" stands for "registration credit" which is equivalent to auditing a course. While the course appears on your transcript with a grade of R, you do not earn points for courses taken for R credit. However, points will not actually be removed until the end of the semester after the "R" has been posted. Permission to take a course for R credit is granted by the course instructor and class dean. An instructor may decline permission to take their course for R credit or may set specific requirements to earn the grade of R.

If you are considering taking a course for R credit, please note the following:

  • Only Columbia College seniors are eligible to take courses for R credit and may register during either/both semesters of their senior year. Students at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science cannot take courses for R credit.

  • Students must be taking enough credit bearing courses to be able to graduate at the end of their senior year.

  • Course may be changed to or from R credit up until the pass/fail deadline of each semester.

  • An instructor may choose to fail a student who has not completed minimum work agreed upon for R credit.

To Register for R Credit

  • Check your DAR carefully to verify that the course or courses in question are not needed for a major or core requirement, and are in excess of the 124 points required for graduation.

  • Pick up an R credit petition form from the Junior Senior Advising Center.

  • Contact your instructor to request permission to take their course for R credit.

  • Once you have received the instructor's permission, submit your completed R credit petition form, with the established minimum requirements and the instructor's signature, to the Junior Senior Advising Center by the pass/fail deadline.

  • Upon receipt of your petition, the Junior Senior Advising Center staff will notify you regarding the status of your petition.

  • If your petition is approved, your instructor should submit a grade of "R" at the end of the semester, just like any other grade.

Helpful Hint:

When you have been approved to take a course for R credit, either ask the instructor to enter an R in the grade book right away, or else remind him/her of it just before finals. Otherwise they may forget that you are taking the course for R credit, find they have no record of any work you have completed, and submit an F.
