Academic Honors and Departmental Awards

Columbia College

Latin Honors

The Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded with honors in three categories: summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude. Latin honors are awarded to no more than twenty-five percent of the graduating class, including October, February, and May graduates. No more than five percent of the class may be summa cum laude, and about ten percent of the class are in each of the other two categories; however, that distribution may vary. You may not apply for honors. If you have successfully petitioned the Junior/Senior center to take less than 12 credits in your last semester, you are still eligible for Latin honors.

HELPFUL HINTS ABOUT LATIN HONORS:

  • Files of the top thirty-five percent of the graduating class (including October, February & May) are reviewed for Latin honor consideration.

  • A high GPA alone is not enough to earn Latin honors; the academic rigor of your transcript is also a factor, along with departmental recommendations. Twenty-five percent of the class is eventually selected for Latin honors.

  • Although consideration for honors is based on work through December, it is possible for an honor to be revoked based on your spring transcript; therefore, it is important to keep up your hard work through graduation.

  • Latin honors are denoted in the Class Day program.

Departmental Honors

Departmental honors are awarded to no more than ten percent, or, in small departments, one member of the graduating major (including October, February, and May graduates). To be considered for departmental honors you must have a grade point average of at least 3.6 in major courses, and have completed an honors thesis or project. You should consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in your department no later than early in the fall term of their senior year if you wish to be considered for departmental honors. Departmental honors are not available in all departments.

Phi Beta Kappa

Ten percent of the senior class is elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Two percent is elected in November on the basis of academic achievement during THE first three years. The other eight percent is elected in the spring. The selection is based not only on academic achievement (GPA and rigor of program), but also on evidence of intellectual promise, character, and achievement outside the classroom. You may not apply for Phi Beta Kappa

SEAS

Latin honors are awarded to no more than 25 percent of the graduating class, including October, February, and May graduates. No more than 5% of the class may be summa cum laude, and about 10% percent of the class are in each of the other two categories; however, that distribution may vary. You may not apply for honors.

Departmental Awards

The faculty in each department will select the award recipients for that department. Questions should be directed to your faculty advisor.
