Post-graduation Options and Services

Considering Graduate, Law, or Medical School?

Whether and when to continue your education is an important decision, since graduate or professional school requires a significant commitment of time, energy, and money. It also means turning down other opportunities that may come your way during that time. As you begin your research, the first questions you should ask yourself are:

Fortunately, there are many resources to help you make an informed decision about whether or not to apply to graduate, law or medical school. Among those resources are the faculty in your department, the Center for Career Education, the Junior Senior Advising Center, the Pre-Professional Office, the Internet, the library, and alumni. Remember to check the weekly emails for information on events related to these options. For additional links on researching graduate schools, visit the Useful Links page.

Fellowship Options

If you are interested in applying for a fellowship, your first stop should be Columbia's Student Affairs Fellowships Web site, which contains a listing of fellowships available to seniors. We suggest that students consult with a class dean before and during the application process.

  • Eligibility and Deadlines: Please keep in mind that pre-applications for some post-graduate study, including Fulbright, Rhodes and Marshall fellowships, are due during spring of junior year. For specific information on available fellowships, consult the Fellowships web site.

  • Contact Information: For more information, visit the Fellowships Office, located in 208 Hamilton Hall, or contact Dean Lavinia Lorch. If you are applying for the Fulbright or DAAD fellowships, you should contact Dean Kathleen McDermott.
