Rembetika, Greek blues, have their roots in Greece's Ottoman legacy. Common instruments are the bouzouki, baglama, violin, and outi while the main themes of this underground music were unrequited love, drugs, alcohol, prison, and death. Rembetika evolved as a sort of undeground, outlaw music, played in tekhedes (taverns) in the port of Peiraius. The first half of this show was devoted to exploring the Ottoman roots of Rembetika, while the second half focused on Markos Vamvakaris ("the patriarch"), and his collaborators. Born in the island of Syros and member of the island's Catholic minority, Vamvakaris' is acknowledged today as the single most important influence on rembetika music.
