This morning's program was dedicated to the music of Bela Bartok, who died in September 1945, in New York City, almost 67 years ago exactly. We started by exploring his Concerto for Orchestra, in its original form and in Bartok's almost unknown arrangement for piano, discovered by his son Peter Bartok in 1987. We then moved on to another very late work, the Third Piano Concerto, before exploring earlier, shorter works for piano solo. The featured pianists today were Gyorgy Sandor and Lili Kraus, both students of Bartok. Of the composer, Kraus writes,"I found Bartok the most beautiful, transcendental, almost saintly human being I had ever seen. I think that his vigilant integrity, along with his ever-ready compassion shining from his wonderful eyes, enlightened us to the infinite scope of his being." The show closed with a few of Bartok's piano pieces played by Bartok himself.
