Middle Eastern Influences playlist for 03/25/2010

This evening, Andrew Kzirian, a talented oud player, came into the studio to play some of his own compositions as well as some classical Ottoman oud pieces. We discussed the unique role the oud plays in Middle Eastern music, the difficulties and complexities of the instrument, and the place of Ottoman-Armenian composers in the oud tradition and in the Armenian music tradition. Andrew also spoke about a concert he and Ara Dinkjian, a master of the oud, are giving next Wednesday night, March 31, at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University at 7 p.m. in the Kellogg Conference Center on the 15th floor. Tickets are free to students, and $5 for the general public. The concert is a concert of Armenian and Ottoman Classical music, and provides the rare opportunity to hear oud duos and solo pieces.
