Billy Taylor Memorial
Submitted by Ellen Walkington on Mon, 3 Jan 2011, 1:56pm
Dr. Billy Taylor, renowned pianist, jazz advocate, and a messenger who delivered the heritage of the music to millions, passed away on December 28th. Born on July 24th, 1921, Taylor's career as a pianist spanned all styles (bebop, Latin, swing) and modes (big bands, small combos, television orchestras) of jazz, giving him the experience to match his talent when creating the Jazzmobile. This program, designed to introduce jazz to schools and to offer the instruction needed to foster young talent, is a large part of Dr. Taylor's legacy. He will be missed.
In memory of his contributions as a jazz performer and educator, WKCR will honor Dr. Taylor with a memorial broadcast until 9 p.m. Jan. 3rd.
