Congratulations! We are delighted to formally extend you the opportunity to serve as a New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) crew captain for the period of Monday, March 18–Monday, September 2, 2024. We are excited that you will become a valued member of our team. As you know, we are committed to attracting and retaining the best and brightest students to support our mission of excellence in the program. Outlined below are the terms surrounding your participation as a New Student Orientation Program crew captain.

Responsibilities

This role is responsible for the day-to-day programming details of the program under the supervision of Undergraduate Student Life staff. The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support the NSOP staff and Committee with student leader selection

  • Serve as a resource to orientation leaders throughout the summer as they prepare for NSOP

  • Always maintain a positive attitude towards Columbia University and NSOP

  • Respect and follow the directions of the NSOP Committee and staff

  • Oversee and advise a group of orientation leaders throughout the NSOP program, including training, Immersion Experiences, and all social and community programming, and assist with questions or concerns as they arise

  • Assist in the implementation of programs throughout NSOP, including staffing events and helping with processes as assigned throughout the program

  • ​Execute other responsibilities as assigned by NSOP staff

  • Attend the NSOP Committee & Crew Captain Meet-and-Greet on Friday, March 22 at noon EST

  • Attend the Orientation Programs Study Break on Saturday , April 27

  • Be available at all times for training and assignments throughout the duration of NSOP week (August 24-September 1). Note: Schedules and assignments will not be available until the end of August; although there will be free time, crew captains should expect to work every day of NSOP

  • Move in on Saturday, August 17, 9:00 a.m.–noon, prior to crew captain training (no exceptions will be made for early or late arrival to training).

General Expectations

Specific tasks/assignments are subject to change in response to unforeseen needs and refocused programming objectives. As a student leader working with our department, it is expected that you will fulfill all of your responsibilities as outlined above, as well as maintain a high level of professionalism at all times. This includes, but is not limited to, attending meetings, being punctual, and meeting deadlines. The student leader is expected to be and remain in good University academic and judicial standing.

This role is expected to be an exceptional leader and mentor to the Undergraduate Student Life community, abiding by all University and school-specific conduct policies. In your capacity you have a duty to report any gender-based misconduct you encounter, or are made aware of, for the entire duration of time that you hold the position. All program-related activities, events, and trips are considered alcohol-free, regardless of legal age. Failure to meet any of these expectations may result in termination of your role. Additionally, you will be held responsible for the costs of your University housing and dining beginning on the date of your early arrival through upper-class move-in day

Payment

Housing and Dining Meals, if approved to live on campus, will be provided to you based on your ability to fulfill your responsibilities. If living on campus for the fall semester, your housing assignment will begin on Saturday, August 17, 2024 and end on Monday, September 1, 2024. These dates are tentative until further notice. Program administrators will reach out once an official move-in date is confirmed. 

University or Public Health Restrictions

Should there be University or Public Health restrictions, including but not limited to COVID-19, that impact planning or operations, we may need to make adjustments and deviations from usual/regular programming. Accordingly, the activities as outlined in this agreement may need to be narrowed/reduced and required expectations would be adjusted. We will provide timely notification as we receive information if such adjustments are made.
