Congratulations! We are delighted to formally extend you the opportunity to serve as a New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) orientation leader for the period of Saturday, April 6 – Monday, September 1, 2024. We are excited that you will become a valued member of our team. As you know, we are committed to attracting and retaining the best and brightest students to support our mission of excellence in the program. Outlined below are the terms surrounding your participation as a New Student Orientation Program orientation leader.

Responsibilities

This role is responsible for the day-to-day programming details of the program under the supervision of Undergraduate Student Life staff. The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Always maintain a positive attitude towards Columbia University and NSOP

  • Respect and follow the directions of crew captains, the NSOP Committee, and NSOP staff

  • Serve as a resource to new students throughout the summer as they prepare for NSOP

  • Oversee and guide a group of new students during NSOP, providing assistance in their transition to Columbia and guidance throughout the week and into the fall semester

  • Assist in the implementation of programs throughout NSOP, including staffing events and helping with processes as assigned throughout the program

  • Act as a positive role model representing Undergraduate Student Life and Columbia University at all times during NSOP and throughout the academic year

  • Lead and facilitate an Immersion Experience as directed by Crew Captain and Committee

  • Facilitate conversation with a group of new students about safe drugs, alcohol, mental health, and wellness on campus 

  • Adhere to the important dates below in a timely manner:

    • OL Signing Sessions (via Zoom): All leaders who have received an offer must attend one of these sessions.

      • Wednesday, April 3 from 7:00-7:30 p.m.

      • Thursday, April 4 from 7:00-7:30 p.m.

      • Friday, April 5 from 10:00 – 10:30 a.m.

    • NSOP Meet Your Cohort (in-person) - Study break for Committee, Crew Captain, and Orientation Leaders​: Saturday, April 27 2:00-4:00 p.m.​

      • Note: Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program OLs will have an additional training and meet-your-cohort day in April. This date will be posted shortly

    • OL Move-In: Orientation Leaders are expected to arrive on campus anytime during the designated move-in times prior to the start of NSOP training: Monday, August 19, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., prior to orientation leader training (no exceptions will be made for early or late arrival to training)​

    • OL Training: Orientation Leaders must be available for the duration of training. Training will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 19 and run through Friday, August 23

    • NSOP 2024: Orientation Leaders must be available for the entirety of NSOP: Saturday, August 24–Monday, September 1

General Expectations

Specific tasks/assignments are subject to change in response to unforeseen needs and refocused programming objectives. As a student leader working with our department, it is expected that you will fulfill all of your responsibilities as outlined above, as well as maintain a high level of professionalism at all times. This includes, but is not limited to, attending meetings, being punctual, and meeting deadlines. The student leader is expected to be and remain in good University academic and judicial standing.

This role is expected to be an exceptional leader and mentor to the Undergraduate Student Life community, abiding by all University and school-specific conduct policies. In your capacity you have a duty to report any gender-based misconduct you encounter, or are made aware of, for the entire duration of time that you hold the position. All program-related activities, events and trips are considered alcohol-free, regardless of legal age. Failure to meet any of these expectations may result in termination of your role. Additionally, you will be held responsible for the costs of your University housing and dining beginning on the date of your early arrival through upperclass move-in day

Payment

Housing and Dining Meals, if approved to live on campus, will be provided to you based on your ability to fulfill your responsibilities. If living on campus for the fall semester, your housing assignment will begin on Monday, August 19, 2024 and end on Monday, September 1, 2024. These dates are tentative until further notice. Program administrators will reach out once an official move-in date is confirmed. 

University or Public Health Restrictions

Should there be University or Public Health restrictions, including but not limited to COVID-19, that impact planning or operations, we may need to make adjustments and deviations from usual/regular programming. Accordingly, the activities as outlined in this agreement may need to be narrowed/reduced and required expectations would be adjusted. We will provide timely notification as we receive information if such adjustments are made.
