Born to Korean parents in Michigan and raised in the Philippines and China, Sydney returned to the US to pursue an Economics-Philosophy degree at Columbia. Sydney has interests in political philosophy, ethics, and epistemology. During her time as an undergraduate, she researched questions relating to cosmopolitanism, migration, multiculturalism, and democratic stability, and worked as a research assistant in labor economics. At Columbia, she was Co-chair of the International Students Advisory Board, Secretary and Senior Advisor of the Korean Students Association, Photographer and Deputy Photo Editor of the Columbia Daily Spectator, Director of Partnerships of the Insight Spark, and a FLAS Fellow. Sydney has produced commissioned art pieces for the likes of creative.nyc, and fiction for The Gadfly, and collaborated with fellow students, including composer Sofia Ouyang for a multimedia piece that premiered at National Sawdust, and with Filmmaker Mariah Barrera for a short documentary piece for the YoungArts Foundation.
My time at Columbia has enriched my life beyond what I had imagined it could. I thank my professors and advisors for their formative guidance, especially Professor Moody-Adams for our conversations on finding the balance between epistemic humility and confidence, and Janet for your constant help and support. I am so deeply indebted to the time I have spent at Columbia and the friends and family who have held me dear.
