Community Building
James Christopher Caraley Memorial Prize
Alan Chen is a third-year in Columbia College studying history and philosophy. Originally from the Bay Area, California, Alan is being recognized for his devotion to building community across ideological lines. As the editor-in-chief of the Columbia Political Review, he has encouraged all 170 members of the publication's staff to interrogate their logics before putting pen to paper. By instituting regular discussion-based workshops to confront the most pressing political issues, Alan has worked to nuance campus discourse while bringing people together on the basis of their shared convictions in humanity.
"I am endlessly grateful to my dad and brother for inspiring me while keeping me grounded. I am equally grateful to my friends, professors, and to the Columbia Political Review's editorial board for supporting me through my every decision."
