In All Languages
The In All Languages Department is responsible for producing WKCR's world music programming. The name In All Languages originates from the Ornette Coleman album/composition of the same name, which might suggest to you that this is not your typical world music broadcasting. We have designed our format to treat each country or region with the concentrated attention it deserves, not just as some part of the world outside the United States. Our shows, though collectively covering a broad range of musical styles, individually demonstrate a focus which we feel you will find both refreshing and rewarding.
A majority of IAL shows are specific to a certain region of the world: Raag Aur Taal and Morning Ragas are devoted to South Asian music, Eastern Standard Time is dedicated to the music of Jamaica, the African Show delves into the musical traditions of Africa, and Sounds of China reviews the variety of music from the Chinese region. However, while these are specific, the In All Languages flagship show is dedicated to other traditions from around the world. The IAL department has maintained a tasteful balance of both detailed and general programming. Please review the individual show descriptions for more information.
Many stations offer world music, yet few offer the authentic, traditional music from rich heritages throughout the world that you will hear on WKCR. No matter which of our programs you tune into, you will appreciate the fact that the music is presented to you in an honest and straight-forward fashion, and is not subject to the throws of political correctness and current trend. We hope you will tune in and experience the exciting variety of sound that only world music can offer.
