Bix Beiderbecke Birthday Broadcast: Tuesday, March 10
Cornetist, pianist, and composer Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke was one of the great musical innovators to emerge in the 1920s. One of jazz’s earliest soloists, he is of enduring importance to the dynamic history of jazz. This Monday, WKCR will dedicate 24 hours of programming to Bix in honor of his 112th birthday anniversary. Young Bix taught himself to play cornet, listening to his brother’s Victrola phonograph and records of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band.
Ornette Coleman Birthday Broadcast: Monday, March 9
Tune in to WKCR as we dedicate a full day of programming to the celebration of the 85th birthday of Ornette Coleman! Ornette Coleman is and has been pursuing the untouched horizons in music since the beginning of his career. Emerging from the Texas blues tradition (all of his music has the gutbucket wail of the blues in there somewhere), Ornette took L.A. and then New York City by storm with his visionary quartet in the late 1950s. His revolutionary concept placed melody, not harmony, at the center of improvisation. That's the key to really hearing Ornette--it's all in the melodies.

Jazz Profiles - Herman Chittison
Join us from 2 to 7pm Sunday, March 8 for an in-depth profile on pianist Herman Chittison, Hosted by Charles Iselin. Though he never achieved widespread fame, Chittison was a unique and masterful pianist of the Swing era, famed for his talent as a vocal accompanist. A native of Kentucky, born in 1908, Chittison had his first break as a musician when he joined Zack Whyte’s Band, but his career took a significant leap when he joined Willie Lewis on his 1934 tour of Europe.

Join us as we honor the life and work of Clark Terry, who passed away on Saturday, February 21st at the age of 94. With a career that spans more than 70 years, Clark Terry was an influential trumpeter, flugelhornist, educator, composer, writer, instrument designer, and NEA jazz master. We will preempt regular programming from 3:00pm today until 3:00pm Tuesday.

Tune in this Sunday Night, February 22nd to a very special "In All Languages," from 11pm to 2am. Robert Browning, New York City's most prolific producer of World Music events will share his personal recordings, highlights from his concerts from over the last 30 years.
Armida on Saturday Night At the Opera
The story of Armida has fascinated artists since the sixteenth century. From Lully to Judith Weir, composers are continually inspired by the love affair between the Saracen sorceress and the Crusader knight, Rinaldo. Using Haydn's Armida (in the Harnoncourt recording with Cecilia Bartoli, Christoph Prégardien, and Patricia Petibon) as a focal point, Saturday night's program will be an exploration of the various musical representations of the fantastical story. Stepan Atamian hosts.

Basketball Simulcasts this Weekend
Tune in as we bring you four Columbia basketball games this Valentine's Day weekend! First, the men visit Harvard tonight. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. You can listen to the broadcasts of the women's game against Harvard beginning at 7 p.m. on the Real Audio stream. The women's game can also be heard on the MP3 stream at the conclusion of the men's broadcast. Coverage of both games against Dartmouth begins at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday evening. You can hear the men's game at 89.9 FM or the MP3 stream, while the women's game will stream on the Real Audio stream.

Josh Lawrence and Anwar Marshall on the Musician's Show
Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and educator Josh Lawrence and drummer Anwar Marshall. Lawrence and Marshall are both graduates of the music program at UArts and are regular members of the Orrin Evans Captain Black Big Band, which features some of the best soloists from New York and Philadelphia.
Jazz & the Arab World on In All Languages
Tune in to the In All Languages show, Sunday 1st of February from 11pm to 2am to hear a special series exploring the fusion between traditional Arabic music with jazz expressions. We'll see how certain jazz musicians from the Middle-East such as the trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf are reshaping the expressions of jazz sounds. We will also look at musicians like Anouar Brahem, Dhafer Youssef or Rabih-Abou Khalil coming from a classical Arabic music background in which they integrate the traditional oud in a jazz context.
Oz Noy on the Musician's Show
Tune in Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM to hear this week's edition of the Musician's Show, where we will be joined by guitarist Oz Noy. Noy was born in Israel, and began planning professionally at age 13. By his mid-20s he was an established studio musician, performing with the house band of Israel’s top-rated television show. Noy made the move to New York City in 1996, and since, has performed at some of the best live music venues in New York including the Bitter End, the Iridium, and the Blue Note.
2015 Jobim Birthday Broadcast: Sunday, January 25 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
WKCR is pleased to bring you a special festival broadcast dedicated to Antonio "Tom" Carlos Jobim on his birthday Sunday, January 25th from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM! Born on January 25th 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Jobim would go on to become one of the most influential songwriters and composers of the twentieth century, he is most reowned for his significant impacts in the bossa nova style. To celebrate Jobim’s enormous musical contributions, we will be playing his music on his birthday as well as interviews and other materials.
