The April 2024 Issue

If this issue of On-Air reaches you earlier in the day than is customary, know that it is for good reason: there is truly something for everyone in this month's issue of On-Air. Rachel Smith writes about WKCR as a metaphor for jazz, and the On-Air staff goes back to the vault to bring you an article on the life and recording career of Billie Holiday written by Phil Schaap for the 2005 Billie Holiday Festival (though we won't be doing 300 hours of Lady Day again this year...). On our cover is Ma Rainey, who we celebrate with eight hours devoted to her discography, and whose relationship to the aesthetics of the Black avant garde is explored in an article. Aside from these very strong articles, we have all the usual suspects: an interview with member Sarah Barlyn, an Around the Station, our show listings, and a couple of concert reviews. We know we say this often, but it is always true—this is an issue of On-Air we are extremely proud to present.
