Donald Byrd Birthday Broadcast
Saturday, December 9, 2023 - 12:00am to 11:59pm

WKCR is excited to announce a special birthday broadcast in honor of the legendary jazz trumpeter, Donald Byrd. As an influential figure in the world of jazz, Donald Byrd's contributions to the genre have left an indelible mark, inspiring countless musicians and enthusiasts around the globe. The broadcast will preempt all regularly-scheduled Saturday shows.

Donald Byrd, born on December 9, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, was not only a virtuoso trumpeter, but also a prolific composer and educator. His career spanned several decades and genres, solidifying Donald Byrd as a trailblazer in the realms of jazz, hard bop, soul, and funk.
Byrd's career breakthrough came in the mid-1950s when he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. His time with the Jazz Messengers marked the beginning of a journey that would see him collaborate with luminaries such as John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Thelonious Monk. He played on a number of sessions in the 50s that would define the “modern jazz” sound.

In the latter part of the 1960s, Donald Byrd underwent what could be called a musical metamorphosis, although it isn’t necessarily fair to say that the elements of funk, and soul that he heavily brought into his work were not previously there. This was evident in albums like "Black Byrd," which became one of the best-selling jazz albums of its time. Byrd's ability to evolve with the changing musical landscape showcased his versatility in pushing the boundaries of jazz. Not confined to the stage, Byrd also played a significant role in academia, holding professorial positions at institutions like Howard University. His influence extended beyond performance, as he mentored, inspired, and recorded with generations of aspiring musicians.

To commemorate Donald Byrd's birthday, WKCR's special broadcast will present a carefully crafted playlist, curated to highlight the extensive depth of Donald Byrd's illustrious career.
