Born on September 23, 1926, John Coltrane is among one of the most influential musicians to have ever lived. He drew influence across many genres such as Bebop, Classical, and American Folk to create a sound that was previously unimaginable. A harmonic, and melodic genius, Trane will be remembered for his deep spirituality and desire to uplift and change the human condition with his music, which will live on forever.

In celebrating John Coltrane's birthday, WKCR's 24-hour broadcast will honor his unique and exceptional legacy, playing selections ranging from his early career time as a sideman with groups such as first Miles Davis Quintet, to his most well known studio and live recordings as a bandleader, as well as his later career avant-garde period. WKCR, known for its deep commitment to preserving and honoring Black American Music, will draw from its vast archive to showcase a mix of live recordings and interviews in addition to the aforementioned collections that provide thoughtful insight into John Coltrane's artistic journey and personal life.
