WKCR announces a special broadcast celebrating the (alleged) 100th birthday of American drummer Philly Joe Jones, broadcast on FM and HD radio and online for 24 hours on Saturday July 15th, 2023. The broadcast will preempt all regularly-scheduled Saturday shows.

Philly Joe Jones, born on July 15, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a pioneering jazz drummer whose innovative rhythms and dynamic style left an indelible mark on the genre. Regarded as one of the most influential drummers of his time, Jones played a vital role in shaping the sound and direction of modern jazz. Jones gained recognition as a member of the legendary Miles Davis Quintet during the 1950s, contributing to some of the most iconic recordings in jazz history. His impeccable sense of timing, crisp articulation, and inventive use of accents and dynamics propelled the rhythm section and set a new standard for drumming. Miles Davis, himself, acknowledged Philly Joe Jones as his personal favorite drummer. He seamlessly adapted his playing to fit various musical contexts and collaborated with an impressive roster of jazz luminaries, including John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and Cannonball Adderley.
