WKCR announces a special broadcast celebrating the 100th birthday of American pianist Red Garland, broadcast on FM and HD radio and online for 24 hours on Sunday, May 13, 2023. The broadcast will preempt all regularly-scheduled Saturday shows.

Born on May 13, 1923, in Dallas, Texas, Red Garland was a key figure in the bebop and hard bop movements of the 1950s and 1960s. He played with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Art Pepper, and his distinctive piano style earned him a devoted following among jazz enthusiasts around the world.

Garland was known for his unique approach to the piano, characterized by a strong, swinging rhythm and a keen sense of harmony. His playing was deeply rooted in the blues and gospel traditions, and he was able to infuse these influences into his jazz performances with ease.
