Class Day Awards & Senior Marshals
Class Day Awards
There are a number of awards bestowed upon graduating seniors at the CC and SEAS Class Day ceremonies in May.
Edward S. Brainard Memorial Prize is a cash prize awarded to the member of the CC graduating class who is judged by classmates to be most worthy of distinction for qualities of mind and character. The senior class is invited to nominate their peers for this award and later votes to determine the recipient.
Charles M. Rolker Prize is a cash prize awarded to the member of the CC graduating class who is judged by classmates to be most worthy of special distinction because of scholarship, participation in student activities, or any combination thereof. The senior class is invited to nominate their peers for this award and later votes to determine the recipient.
Charles H. Bjorkwall Prize is a cash prize awarded annually to a member of the CC graduating class for unselfish service to the College community. The prize was established by Ottle Emma Bjorkwall in memory of her brother, Dr. Charles H. Bjorkwall.
Alumni Prize is awarded by the Alumni Association of the College to the CC senior judged by classmates to be the most faithful and deserving. The senior class is invited to nominate their peers for this award and later votes to determine the recipient.
Robert Lincoln Carey Memorial Prize is a cash prize and trophy in the form of a lion awarded annually by the Alumni Association of the College to the CC senior who, through a combination of leadership qualities as exercised in the non-athletic extracurricular program of Columbia College and outstanding achievement in the academic program of the College, best exemplifies the ideals which Robert Lincoln Carey sought to engender in the students of Columbia College.
Alumni Association Achievement Award is a cash prize and trophy in the form of a Columbia Lion awarded annually to the member of the CC Senior Class who is judged to be most outstanding for qualities of mind, character, and service to the College.
Columbia College Scholar Athlete Award is presented from time to time by the Office of the Dean to that graduating CC student who has distinguished himself or herself as a varsity athlete and scholar.
George Vincent Wendell Memorial Medal, established in 1924 by alumni and faculty friends of the late Professor George Vincent Wendell to honor and perpetuate his memory, is a certificate and award granted annually by choice of the class and faculty to that member of the SEAS graduating class who best exemplifies his ideals of character, scholarship, and service. One student is nominated by each department; and the SEAS senior class votes to determine the recipient.
School of Engineering Student Activities Award is presented to the SEAS senior who by virtue of his or her willingness, energy, and leadership has significantly contributed to the co-curricular life of the School.
School of Engineering and Applied Science Scholar Athlete Award is presented from time to time by the Office of the Dean to that graduating SEAS student who has distinguished himself or herself as a varsity athlete and scholar.
Senior Marshal is an honor bestowed upon members of the graduating class who have demonstrated achievement in their academics and extracurricular activities as a student at Columbia University. Senior Marshals are worthy of recognition for their personal achievements and for demonstrating what it means to “be a Columbian”.
Senior Marshals are distinguished at Columbia College and School of Engineering and Applied Science Class Days and University Commencement by the gold aiguillettes that adorn their graduation gowns.
In addition to holding a place of honor in the processions, Senior Marshals are responsible for helping to assemble and lead their classmates at graduation events.
All Senior Marshals attend a reception and training session, at which their responsibilities are described in greater detail.
Senior Marshals are nominated by fellow graduating students within the nominee's school, faculty, staff, and administrators. Students will be notified in April if they have been selected to serve as a Senior Marshal for their graduating class.
