ASB: NYC Performing Arts

The Alternative Spring Break: New York City Performing Arts is a six-day, multidisciplinary program of events focusing on professional performing arts in New York City.  Over the course of the program, students will attend 5-6 quality performances spanning the disciplines of theatre, music, and dance.  We will have a professional performing arts group in residence on campus during this time, and participants in the ASB will participate in workshops and view their process.  We also anticipate attending talkbacks from leading practitioners and workshops covering a wide variety of topics from creating new work to audience development to the way in which arts organizations in New York operate at the professional level.   Students will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own work and how they can use their Spring Break experience to affect the performing arts community on campus.

2015 ASB: NYC Performing Arts Specifics

When

Tuesday, March 17 – Sunday, March 22, 2015*
There will be one mandatory meeting for accepted students taking place during February 2015 -- specific date and time TBD.
*Participants are expected to participate in all ASB:NYC activities; participants should NOT expect to be able to participate in other meetings/events/plans during this period.

Where

Venues throughout New York. CC/GS/SEAS students are able to stay in their University housing; BC  students should work with their respective housing office to ensure they will have access to housing over spring break.

Who

Students with a passion for performing arts – with any (or no) amount of experience.  We would like the group to represent the wide range of student experience and interest across our campus.  We are thrilled to be able to open this program up to undergraduates in all four schools (Barnard College, Columbia College, Columbia Engineering and General Studies).*
*As the program is highly subsidized through the separate colleges, there are a limited number of spaces available for participants from each of the schools.

How much

Students will be asked to contribute $200 for the six-day program.  If providing the student contribution proves difficult for some students, financial aid, fundraising activities or aid in a financing plan may be available.  Please note, this contribution does not cover the cost of meals or transportation.

How to apply

The ASB: NYC Performing Arts Application is available online.  Should you have any questions about applying or the program in general, please email David Milch, Associate Director, Student Engagement.

Responses from previous ASB NYC Performing Arts participants:

"If the thought-provoking arts scene was one of the reasons you chose to come to NYC, then you should definitely do this program."

"This program exposed me to so many new performance venues in the city and enabled me to confidently explore the various neighborhoods that I would have never visited on my own. It not only encouraged my enthusiasm for creativity in the performing arts, but also my enthusiasm for NYC in general."

"It excited me for my future as an artist, and I am grateful to have interacted with such a variety of artists."

"I most value from this experience the relationships I've built with the other participants. There is something about the arts that draws people together."

"ASB opened many new windows of exploration for me, in terms of the way I approach the creative process, engage with fellow artists during the creative process, and the way I experience Art"
