Timeline

Application Year

Summer

  • For those taking the June LSAT, good luck!

  • Continue reading about legal careers.

  • If taking the LSAT in October, register for it as soon as possible. Again, the earlier an applicant registers for the exam, the better their chances are of being assigned their first- or second-choice test center. Registration information available on the LSAC Web site. Practice! Practice! Practice!

  • Register with CAS if not already registered and have recommendation letters sent to them.

  • Begin writing the personal statement. Review the Personal Statement handout. Staff members in the Office of Pre-professional Advising are available to give applicants feedback on personal statements.

  • Review Columbia transcript. If accurate, submit the Columbia transcript and transcripts from any other colleges attended to CAS. Undergraduates who have an inaccurate Columbia transcript should immediately contact their respective advising center and alumni/ae should contact the Office of Pre-professional Advising.

  • Determine method of submitting law school applications: paper copy, electronically on the school’s Web site.

  • Compile a tentative list of law schools to apply to. Share this list with an advisor in the Office of Preprofessional Advising.
